‘Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies.’ 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
This verse struck me a few years ago as I re-read it. It’s extremely significant that our bodies are temples.
When you look at the physical temple in the Old Testament you see that God was present there and His presence was so phenomenal and powerful that only certain people could enter. Yet in the New Testament, because of what Jesus did on the cross, it is said that we are the temples of God!
Like don’t just read that and move on. Soak it in! We are the temples of God. He lives in us. His awesome presence that could only be experienced by a few in the past now lives in us and through us.
If we really get that then we know straight away that these beautiful and purpose-built temples we carry around should be taken the very, very best care of.
And I’m not talking about self care, I’m talking about the pursuit of excellence. Being your best self because it honours God who abides in you. Being excellent because an excellent God chose you to be His temple, His holy place.
So how do we honour God with our temple? How do we take excellent care of our temple?
It must be by taking care of our whole self.
If we read the Bible every day but have no control over how we eat, filling our bodies with food that will cause illnesses and fatigue, we aren’t presenting God with our very best.
If we eat amazingly well but don’t pray and read God’s word then our spirit will be starved and all the nutrients we consume would not make up for the lack we feel in our core. Not spending time meditating and getting to know our God in the word makes it impossible for us to honour Him.
If we eat well and read the Word but don’t consider others, creating a bubble around ourselves, feeding only ourselves, we will soon reach a plateau and our temples will never be as gorgeous as they were made to be.
If we read the word, pray for and support others and eat well, we will certainly feel great, but without nourishing our minds, learning to introspect and strengthening our identity, we will not be able to sustain our better habits.
To take excellent care of our temple we need to care for our mind, body AND spirit. To honour God we need to love Him with our whole self.
